Dear Parent/Carer To quote the track from our Assembly launch of the year ahead: This is it! This time I know its for real! The time has undoubtedly come. The year group responded impressively: terrific attention to every detail, excellent punctuality and across their faces, the real understanding that we all have a most serious job to do. It was a genuine pleasure to see them all, it was remarkable to announce so many superb GCSE successes already and we are excited already about how the year will gather pace. To set the ball rolling I introduced the team who will deliver our intervention programme. Mr. Peacock is joined, I am delighted to say, by a returning friend and colleague, Mrs Pilgrim and together with support of course from me and Mrs Bond, we are launching this initiative. As part of the Gold Standard of GCSE achievement, 5 A* - C grades, including Maths and English are the pathways to further training and education at 16+. They are indeed the keys to unlock a vast range of possibilities for our young people. With this in mind, we have begun a series of mentoring, coursework catch-up and target-setting meetings with some pupils. Naturally all the cohort will need different levels and types of support and help this year so we shall be using the data to interrogate academic progress as well as more pastoral approaches to those who may feel hesitant about their coping strategies. As we all know, procrastination is both the enemy of positive progress and the favourite response of the teenager! I pointed out last year that the homework habit is not only vital to boosting academic progress itself but it goes an enormous way to building confidence and a sense of control. Without routine, panic, anxiety and unfulfilled potential take over. This is obviously where we need your strong support. I hope at Parents Consultation afternoon, you will be able to assess how your own independent learner is coping. It is clear testament to how successfully the cohort is actually dealing with Life in year 11 as they will take in their stride a week of Work Experience soon as well! We are all very impressed that every single pupil has a placement and we are equally enthusiastic to see how it all goes a resounding success, I feel sure. This multi-tasking, this mass plate-spinning is as we know the stuff of adult life. How well so many of the year group do already with hard work and out of school commitments which is a direct reflection of very strong Support Teams at home. I have a personal belief that year 11 is almost the final real push for young people. It is often parents last opportunity for concerted, continuous - dare I say, pressure. We all want to encourage, we all want to support and guide but this year, coercing the horses to drink long and hard at the education trough may be necessary. We are all in this together, we are here for advice and information it is indeed a real Team Effort. I enclose a calendar which is surely enough to galvanise any 15 year old (and their parents alike!) It contains all the available information at present so please keep a copy for reference although it is also on the website. All year 11s will have their own A5 copy in Planners and an A3 copy in Tutor rooms so no excuses! Organisation and preparation will be so important in building responsible attitudes so, as the momentum increases, all your sons and daughters will be ready for the challenge..
